Abstract

An Examination of the Correlation between Advancements in TBI Research and the Long-Term Health Outcomes of High-Risk Populations: The Use of Biomarkers vs. Symptom Assessment

Hillary Dodyk*

Historically, assessment for Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) has been dependent on the subjective collection of selfreported symptoms. However, developments in neurophysiology have identified unique biomarkers that correlate with concussive injury and imaging modalities that allow for visualization of changes to the Blood Brain Barrier (BBB). This review will examine the utility of these novel identifiers as an objective option for acute evaluation and their potential contribution to treatment planning.
