The electro reduction of 5-(2-chlorophenyl)-1, 3- dihydro-7-2H-1, 4-benzodiazepin-2-one (clonazepam) has been studied by cyclic voltammetry at glassy carbon electrodes under the acidic conditions which indicate the reducible behavior of the drug. Electro-reduction of clonazepam has also been studied by the Galvanstatic technique at copper and amalgamated forms of copper and lead electrodes under acidic conditions. The reduction product was isolated and characterized by TLC, usual laboratory qualitative tests and IR, NMR spectral analysis. Effect of different parameters like current density, temperature, depolarizer concentration and nature of cathode material on yield percentage and current efficiency has been investigated. Number of electrons have also been calculated to confirm the isolated product, which is 2-amino-9- (4-chlorophenyl)-5,7,8,9-tetrahydro-6Hbenzo[ 7]annulen-6-one.
