Cancer’ is a malignant disease that is characterized by rapid and uncontrolled formation of abnormal cells which may mass together to form a growth or tumour, or proliferate throughout the body. Next to heart disease, cancer is a killer of mankind. The present study aims at a preliminary phytochemical analysis and anticancer evaluation of Dioscorea hispida, Dennst. against Ehrlich Ascites Carcinoma in animal model. The results indicate that ethanolic extract of Dioscorea hispida leaves (DhLE) possess significant anticancer activity at the dose varying from 100mg/kg to 200mg/kg body weight. It has increased the survival of animals with ascites tumour, decreased the body weight induced by the tumour burden, reduced packed cell volume and viable tissue cell count and also reduce elevated level of lipid peroxidation due to higher content of Phenolic compounds. Thus DhLE may have therapeutic application against cancer.
