The New Year 2008, starts with new hopes, new expectations and new aims. We make resolutions to avoid repeating past mistakes which should serve as lessons to all of us. Thus new horizons lie before us and different goals are set, which are based on the values of decency and virtue enabling us to participate honorably in the scientific and social reality.

Yet the New Year finds our planet shattered by riots. The law of violence and lack of emulation and altruism seem to prevail.

Isolated in our egos, we are incapable of even turning our eyes and heart upon our weaker fellow men.

Many of us struggle to conquer material goods. We aspire to gain authority and domination over others without reflecting on the fact that we are a mere infinitesimal unit in our illimitable universe. It is instrumental however to re-establish the urgent need to co-exist, to emulate, and to contribute.

Friendships, collaborations and families are often disintegrated for the cause of personal interest; but above all, morals are disrupted, traditions and even history are disdained. The subordination of “I” to “We” has either almost vanished or has been replaced by the predominant egocentricity and arrogance.

At the same time scientists, particularly in the health service, withdrawn in their laboratories, often consume their lives in order to discover new medicines, which could control incurable diseases.

However, one perceives sometimes even these great researchers and important people are neither appreciated nor promoted; thus they are usually forced to emigrate confirming the rule “No man is a prophet in his own country”.

What has already been reported is part of the so-called ‘gray’ side, but there is always an antipode. There is hope that things can actually change. There are people we do not know, people bent over their microscopes or working in intensive care units or at the patients’ bedsides offering their heart and soul.

These people whether many or few could lead the way for the sake of the future generations, the young scientists of today who seek virtuous models to blaze a trail.

Research in Greece has made significant progress over the last thirty-five years and this progress continues to develop at a satisfying pace.

Undoubtedly, if there were a system of financing similar to that of other countries, that is to say, if each scientist was given the opportunity, once or twice a year, to request that his research be financed, then research in our country would flourish.

Scientific journals, printed or electronic, keep pouring in thus revealing an attempt for the better so that scientists are in fact given the chance to publish and have the courage to be judged or even questioned.

During the past year, Health Science Journal published many original researches, important reviews and specific articles answering to a great extent the requirements of its receivers. It will also continue this year to upgrade its services. Undoubtedly, its success will depend on the accuracy of the scientific articles it will publish, as well as the participants’ authenticity of disposition and reliability of deeds.
