Abstract:

INTRODUCTION: The patients with gastrointestinal tract complaints of pain in abdomen, dyspepsia, etc. form the major disease group in all ages in rural setup, so thorough investigations and histopathological correlation becomes important for further management of disease. AIM & OBJECTIVES: A. To classify and study Histopathological lesions of upper gastrointestinal tract on endoscopic biopsy along with clinical findings. B. To find out frequency of occurrence of various upper gastrointestinal lesions in relation to age and sex. MATERIALS & METHODS : The specimen included in our study were endoscopic biopsies of upper gastrointestinal tract received in department of pathology. All the specimen were fixed in 10% formalin and processed as per routine HE examination. Special stains used wherever necessary. RESULTS : Our study included 70 upper GIT endoscopic biopsy of which 38 (26.6 %) were inflammatory and 8 (5.6%) were benign, 22 (15.4%) were neoplastic and 02(1.4%) were other cases. Male preponderance was seen among the cases studied. Benign lesions were seen in 2nd to 5th decades whereas malignant lesions were seen in older age group. CONCLUSION: This study revealed that stomach was the common site for inflammatory and neoplastic lesions. In our study, the incidence of gastric carcinoma is high among all upper GIT malignant lesions. So, endoscopy followed by histopathological examination is necessary for early diagnosis and management of upper GIT lesions.
