Abstract:

Hematological line tumors affect patients systemically and are occasionally aggressive. Leukemias and lymphomas are treated with chemotherapy and radiotherapy, with intensities and inclusions depending on the type of tumor and extent of the illness. In some cases, patients will need bone marrow transplants to restart their hematological lines and enable improvement in tumor response control, for which patients would need treatment in order to reduce the amount of white blood cells in circulation or of tumor cells. This can be obtained through high-dosage chemotherapy and a regimen of pre-bone marrow transplant conditioning. Total body irradiation (TBI) can form part of the pre-transplant conditioning regimen and plays an essential role in reducing circulating tumor cells, as well as the natural cells of the host, and reduce risks of graft-versus-host-disease. The technical irradiation process with TBI is complex and demands care which will be described in this study.
