This 1 hour talk will introduce the 2 x 4 Model design and implementation, as a new blueprint and operational guide for individual clinics and networks of clinics that aim to achieve full integration of mental health and addiction services and clinical expertise. 2 x 4 Model Clinics would operate as the clinical home for addiction psychiatrists, the multidisciplinary teams they lead, and their training programs. Fully operational 2 x 4 Model clinics like those being developed in central Indiana in the U.S., provide complete science- based capability of treating any major mental illness or any major addiction, in any combination or degree of severity, as they may co-occur, by one team under one roof. This presentation will overview the neuroscientific, clinical, and epidemiological basis for the 2 x 4 Model design, with a description of its essential diagnostic, psychotherapeutic, pharmacological, and professional communication tools and methods. By the end of the talk, the audience will appreciate the potential of the 2 x 4 Model design as an addiction psychiatry-led solution to the international behavioral health crisis, in which professional training, clinical care and research is fragmented and segregated into artificial, and clinically detrimental, mental health vs. addiction treatment compartments, and where psychotherapy vs. medication managements remain needlessly uncoordinated..
R. Andrew Chambers, MD is Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the Indiana University (IU) School of Medicine in Indianapolis. Andy is a graduate of Centre College (1991), Duke University School of Medicine (1996), and Yale University Psychiatry Residency and Fellowship Programs in Neuroscience (2002). He graduated from the Addiction Psychiatry Training Program at IU in 2012, and is now the Director. Andy’s basic, clinical and neurocomputational research has been supported by grants from NARSAD, the American Psychiatric Association, National Institutes on Drug Abuse, Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, and the Veterans Administration. Andy’s research on the neurobiological and developmental basis of addiction vulnerability in mental illness has recently been translated into a new textbook of addiction psychiatry clinical care and professional training: “The 2 x 4 Model: a Neuroscience-based Blueprint for the Modern Integrated Addiction and Mental Health Treatment System” Routledge, Taylor and Frances, New York, 2018
